We wish you all the very best for 2023!
No more resolutions that seem like a chore and that you only keep for a week. Here's a much more fun challenge: to dress in chic, sustainable French clothes. A little surprise awaits you at the end of the article to motivate you!
Choose Made in France
We're hearing more and more about "Made in France" or "Fabriqué en France", particularly with the MIF trade show attracting more and more visitors and the rise of committed brands. In practical terms, what does "Made in France" mean?
What is made in France?
The words "Made in France" are protected but often used to mislead consumers. We explain the conditions under which a brand can use these messages in its communication tools.
Definition of Made in France
A product said to be "Made in France" is one that is manufactured mainly in France by French companies. The words "made in France" or "Made in France" affixed to a product mean that the item underwent its last substantial transformation in France or meets a minimum threshold of added value produced in France of the "ex-factory" price (e.g. 45% for certain products).
3 reasons to choose Made in France
In practice, what are the advantages of buying clothes from French brands that are recognised as ethical or carry a label?
A personal commitment
Be true to your values by looking for French alternatives to most of the products you buy. It's easier to buy cheap foreign-made products that you can find almost anywhere, but doing more research to find French alternatives is part of a genuine desire to do better.
At a time when the fashion industry is devastating the planet and its people, choose "slow fashion". This is a term that describes a more responsible, sustainable and virtuous vision of fashion and encourages more conscious practices (local manufacturing, pre-orders, fair trade, etc.).
Recognition and conservation of French know-how
With globalisation and increasingly competitive prices, a lot of French know-how has gradually disappeared. This is the case, for example, with flax spinning, which is making a comeback in France (the last French flax spinning mill closed in 2006) thanks to a number of initiatives such as Safilin and Linpossible.
When you buy French clothes, you're promoting an entire production chain and artisanal work.
The choice of sustainability
French 'ethical' or 'sustainable' fashion products are designed to offer greater durability. Manufacturers aim to offer clothes that are better designed, taking into account the cut, materials used, manufacturing methods and genuine quality control.
The thought that goes into quality is taken a step further, and all the decisions made during the manufacturing process make for a 'sustainable' garment. In short, you're buying a garment that costs more but lasts ten times longer and is more wash-resistant.

A conscious vision of fashion
The production plant for our garments is located in Mayenne, 280 kilometres from the DBC premises. It is here that all the stages of production are carried out, from the creation of the patterns to the final finishing touches. The pieces are cut and assembled in this workshop, as is the final embroidery of our logo.
All Du Bon Côté shirts are made in France, so we'll soon be proudly displaying the OFG label on our website.
